Payment methods in the Maldives: cards, wallets and transfers

Payment methods in the Maldives: cards, wallets and transfers — Kira, Maldives

Bank of Maldives dominates, two mobile wallets cover the gaps, and cards work in fewer places than you would expect once you leave the capital.

Paying for things here is straightforward once you know which rail to use where.

Bank of Maldives (BML)

BML is the default for almost everything. Most salaries land in a BML account, most transfers move between BML accounts, and the BML app is the single most-used financial tool in the country.

  • Transfers between BML accounts are instant and free
  • Transfers to other banks clear within a working day
  • The app handles bill payments, top-ups and standing instructions

If you are living here, a BML account is not optional in practice.

Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB)

MIB offers Shariah-compliant banking and has a smaller but real share. Transfers work fine; the limitation is that fewer businesses and services list MIB as an accepted destination, so check before relying on it for something specific.

Mobile wallets

Two, tied to the two mobile operators:

  • Ooredoo m-Faisaa
  • Dhiraagu Pay

Both do the same job: instant transfers, merchant payments by QR, and top-ups. They are genuinely useful on smaller islands where card terminals are rare but phones are universal.

Wallet transfers are typically capped — often around MVR 25,000 per transaction — so they are for daily spending rather than moving large sums.

Cards

Visa and Mastercard work in Malé, Hulhumalé, resorts and larger businesses. American Express is patchy.

Outside those, assume cards will not work. Small island shops, ferry counters, local cafés and market stalls are cash or wallet.

Foreign cards carry the usual conversion margin, and some merchants will offer to charge you in your home currency — decline it. Dynamic currency conversion is consistently worse than letting your own bank do it.

Cash

The rufiyaa (MVR) is pegged in a band against the US dollar, around 15.42 MVR to 1 USD for official transactions. Dollars are widely accepted at resorts and the airport, less so elsewhere, and the informal rate you are offered in a shop will not be in your favour.

Carry small notes. Breaking a MVR 500 in a local café is awkward.

Receiving money from abroad

  • Bank wire to BML: works, takes two to four days, carries fees at both ends
  • Wise and similar: supported for MVR payout via bank transfer, usually cheaper than a wire
  • Western Union / MoneyGram: widely available, expensive, useful when speed matters

A short checklist for new residents

  1. Open a BML account as soon as you have a work permit or residency document
  2. Install the BML app and complete verification before you need it urgently
  3. Add one mobile wallet, matched to whichever operator you are on
  4. Keep MVR 500–1,000 in cash for anywhere the above does not reach
