When to visit the Maldives: weather month by month — Kira, Maldives

Two monsoons, one dry season and a pricing calendar that follows both. What each month actually feels like.

The Maldives has no winter. It has two monsoons, and the difference between them decides both your weather and your bill.

The two seasons

Iruvai — northeast monsoon, December to April. The dry season. Light winds, calm seas, reliable sun. Also peak season, with prices to match.

Hulhangu — southwest monsoon, May to November. The wet season. Heavier rain, stronger winds, rougher crossings. Prices drop by a third or more.

"Wet season" oversells it. Rain here arrives as intense bursts that pass in an hour, not as days of grey drizzle. A wet-season week can still deliver five clear days.

Diving and surfing

These two want opposite things.

Diving is best January to April: flat water, visibility often past 30 metres. Manta and whale shark movements shift with the monsoon — the western atolls are better in the dry season, the eastern in the wet.

Surfing runs on the southwest monsoon. The season is roughly March to October, peaking June to August, when the swell reaches the eastern atolls.

Ramadan

Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year. On local islands and in Malé, cafés close during daylight and the rhythm of the day changes completely. Resorts operate normally. If you are visiting local islands, plan around it — or plan into it, because the evenings are extraordinary.

The honest recommendation

Best weather, whatever it costs: February or March.

Best value: late October or early November — prices still low, weather already turning.

Avoid if you can: late December, unless you have booked long in advance and do not mind the crowd.
