Which social platform actually works in the Maldives

A market of half a million people behaves nothing like a market of fifty million. Where attention actually is here, platform by platform.
Advice written for large markets misleads you here. The Maldives is small, highly connected and mobile-first, and the platform ranking is not the global one.
Telegram
The strongest channel in this market. Group culture is deep — islands, trades, interests, buying and selling all run through Telegram groups. Forwarding is the primary discovery mechanism.
If you build one thing, build here.
Viber
Still widely used, particularly by older users and for community groups. Underrated because it is unfashionable elsewhere. Worth a presence if your audience skews over 35.
Large reach, especially outside Malé and among the resident workforce. Groups remain active. Organic page reach is poor, as everywhere, but group reach is not.
Strong with under-30s in the capital. Good for visual content and personality-led accounts. Weak for anything requiring explanation — the format fights detail.
TikTok
Growing quickly. Young, mostly entertainment. Hard to convert directly, useful for visibility if you can make watchable video.
X
Small here. A niche of media, politics and English-language commentary. Not a growth channel for this audience.
Universal for one-to-one, and group limits make it weak for broadcast. Useful as a contact point, not as an audience.

Language
English reaches the resident workforce and most educated locals. Dhivehi reaches the local audience with far less friction and almost nobody produces content in it. That gap is an opportunity — the effort pays back disproportionately.
Hindi and Bengali reach a substantial resident population that is routinely ignored.
Paid advertising
Be realistic. Google Ads and Meta require prior written permission for this category, licensed by country, and the Maldives is not on those lists. Affiliate sites are generally excluded regardless.
Plan on organic reach and community. It is slower and it is what actually works here.
The practical recommendation
One Telegram channel with a linked discussion group. A Facebook presence for cross-posting into groups. Everything else only if you genuinely enjoy making that kind of content — half-hearted presence on five platforms beats nothing, but loses to one done well.
